Every corridor in Labyrinth of Zangetsu looks as if it were brushed onto rice paper. Acquire, the studio behind Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls, rendered this first-person dungeon crawler in the style of sumi-e ink painting, and the effect is haunting: monochrome stone, swirling black clouds and monsters that seem to bleed out of the page. It is a striking identity for a genre usually content with stone walls and torchlight, and it gives every descent a quiet, ominous beauty.
The world is dying of ink. A corruption called the Ink of Ruin has swept across the empire and filled it with Ink Beasts, and the fortress city of Ido is the last human stronghold. You lead a band of Brightbane conscripts, soldiers able to resist the Ink's influence, into the labyrinths beyond the walls. The party of six fights in two ranks, the front line trading blows while the back row casts spells or attacks with suitable ranged weapons. Characters can be rolled from scratch, choosing a race, including the half-cat Nekomata, and a class such as warrior, cleric, mage, monk, samurai, ninja or sage. Levels are earned within each class, so switching classes to combine skills and unlock advanced options turns party building into a long, rewarding project.
Exploration is pure old-school tension. The automap only works when the party can see, so torches and light spells matter, and the halls hide traps, secret items, warning signs and optional quests. Ink Beasts drift through the corridors as visible clouds you can try to slip past, treasure chests have to be disarmed or forced open at real risk to the party, and loot must be identified back in Ido before it can be used. Experience only turns into levels once you return to town, and death carries a heavy cost, since revival is expensive and can fail.
The soundtrack draws on Japanese music from across the centuries, from gagaku court music to the haunting tones of noh, and it fits the ink-wash dungeons perfectly. Labyrinth of Zangetsu brings Acquire's long love of the Wizardry formula together with the sumi-e art it once explored in Sumioni: Demon Arts, and the result is a handsome, demanding PS4 crawler that rewards patience, careful mapping and a party you have built yourself.
Labyrinth of Zangetsu is new 3D dungeon RPG by Acquire. Its gameplay systems are a return to the "roots" of hack-and-slash. It is a title that emphasizes "wa" (the Japanese-style), which is Acquire’s specialty. It depicts a “deep” world view illustrated by ink painting brush strokes. And features a “mixture of wa” sound that channels the music of Japan’s various eras, from "gagaku" (traditional Japanese music and dance) to "noh" (traditional Japanese masked dance-drama). Labyrinth of Zangetsu is developed based on these four keywords.
