Item Description

Drawing from an empty library normally ends your game. Laboratory Maniac turns that rule on its head: if you would draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win instead. It is a three-mana blue 2/2 Human Wizard with a single line of text, and that line has launched countless combo decks.

The appeal is the puzzle of getting there. Self-mill engines, cards that exile or shuffle away your own library, and big draw spells all become win conditions once the Maniac is on the battlefield, and Commander players have long paired it with tricks like Demonic Consultation to empty the deck in one shot. It made its name in Innistrad's mad-science corner of the multiverse, and few creatures are as satisfying to win with.

This is the Time Spiral Remastered printing, collector number 309, illustrated by Jason Felix, in non-foil. It comes from the set's timeshifted bonus sheet, which presents modern cards in the classic pre-2003 frame, so this Maniac looks like it wandered out of a 1990s binder. Its flavor text sums him up: "His mind whirled with grand plans, never thinking of what might happen if he were to succeed."
