Item Description
Running out of cards is supposed to be how you lose. Laboratory Maniac flips that rule on its head with a single line: if you would draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win the game instead. It is a three-mana blue 2/2 Human Wizard with no combat ambitions at all, and it doesn't need any.
Lab Man became the blueprint for a whole family of combos. Players paired it with Demonic Consultation, Tainted Pact or self-mill engines to empty their own libraries on purpose, then drew one more card for the win, and later cards like Jace, Wielder of Mysteries and Thassa's Oracle built on the same idea. In Commander and casual play it is still a thrill to assemble, and a 2/2 body for three mana means it can sit on the table looking harmless until the moment the library runs dry.
This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 1097, from The Weirdest Pets in the Multiverse drop, a borderless foil illustrated by Omar Rayyan. Rayyan's whimsical storybook style suits a drop built around Magic's strangest companions, and the card carries new flavor text to match, a tongue-in-cheek boast that by careful calculation the odd companion pictured here outranks the dog as man's best friend.
