Item Description

Watch the suspect's eyes. In L.A. Noire, a man who glances away, swallows hard or smiles a beat too long might be lying to you, and catching that tell is the whole game. Team Bondi's 2011 detective thriller, published by Rockstar Games, used a capture technology called MotionScan to record actors' complete facial performances, and the result made interrogation, of all things, the most gripping part of an open-world crime game.

You play Cole Phelps, a decorated war veteran and ambitious LAPD officer portrayed by Mad Men's Aaron Staton, working his way up from patrol through the Traffic, Homicide, Vice and Arson desks in 1947 Los Angeles. Each case begins at a crime scene where you comb the area for clues, a musical chime and a buzz of the controller telling you something matters, then follows leads across a painstakingly recreated city. Interviews come down to reading a face and choosing Truth, Doubt or Lie, and calling someone a liar means having the evidence to prove it. Get it wrong and the case still closes, just with less of the story uncovered and a lower rating at the end.

The cases are where the noir lives. Many draw on real crimes reported in the Los Angeles papers of 1947, and the Homicide desk's string of murders carries the shadow of the Black Dahlia case that haunted the city that year. Car chases, rooftop foot pursuits and the occasional shootout punctuate the investigations, but the real pleasure is in the slow work of piecing a story together and watching the moral rot spread beneath the sunny postwar surface. In homage to the films that inspired it, you can switch the entire game to black and white, and it looks wonderful that way.

L.A. Noire made history as the first video game chosen as an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival, and its mix of slow-burn detective work and Hollywood period drama has rarely been attempted on this scale since. On the PS3 it is a chance to walk those streets as Cole Phelps, notebook in hand, and decide for yourself who in this city is telling the truth.

About the game

L.A. Noire is a neo-noir detective action-adventure video game developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games. It was initially released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms on 17 May 2011; a Microsoft Windows port was later released on 8 November 2011. L.A. Noire is set in Los Angeles in 1947 and challenges the player, controlling a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer, to solve a range of cases across five divisions. Players must investigate crime scenes for clues, follow up leads, and interrogate suspects, and the player's success at these activities will impact how much of each case's story is revealed. The game draws heavily from both the plot and aesthetic elements of film noir—stylistic films made popular in the 1940s and 1950s that share similar visual styles and themes, including crime and moral ambiguity—along with drawing inspiration from real-life crimes for its in-game cases, based upon what was reported by the Los Angeles media in 1947. The game uses a distinctive colour palette, but in homage to film noir it includes the option to play the game in black and white.
