Magic: The Gathering single: Kytheon, Hero of Akros. Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
Three attackers, one big swing, and a soldier walks off the battlefield as a planeswalker. Kytheon, Hero of Akros is the young Gideon before his spark ignited: a one-mana white 2/1 who, if he and at least two other creatures attacked, is exiled at end of combat and returns transformed into Gideon, Battle-Forged. Paying two generic and one white mana makes him indestructible for the turn, which helps him survive long enough to see the flip.
The planeswalker side starts at 3 loyalty and gives you real choices: +2 to force an opposing creature to attack Gideon on its next turn, +1 to make one of your creatures indestructible and untap it, or 0 to turn Gideon himself into a 4/4 indestructible creature that prevents all damage dealt to him that turn. That is a lot of game from a one-drop, and it rewards go-wide white decks, Boros aggro and Commander token strategies that can send three attackers on the very first big swing.
This is the San Diego Comic-Con 2015 promo printing, collector number 23, from the exclusive convention set of the five Magic Origins flip-walkers, presented in a premium black-on-black treatment illustrated by Wayne Reynolds. It is a distinctive piece of convention history for Gideon collectors and anyone who loves Magic's origin-story cards.
