Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Five floors, five bosses, one kidnapped girlfriend and a clock that never stops: Kung Fu is about as pure as an action game gets. Thomas, a martial arts master, storms Mr. X's temple to rescue Sylvia, punching and kicking his way along each floor while henchmen pour in from both sides of the screen. Each floor ends with a guardian, the Stick Fighter, the Boomerang Fighter, the Giant and the Black Magician, before Mr. X himself waits at the top.

Every enemy demands a different answer. Grippers rush in to grab Thomas and drain his energy until you shake them loose, Knife Throwers attack high and low and take two hits to put down, and the little Tom Toms grab or somersault into you, punishing a careless crouch. Even-numbered floors add hazards such as falling pots, snakes, dragons and confetti balls, so you never settle into an easy rhythm, and the timer keeps the pressure on. Crouching kicks, jump kicks and well-timed punches become second nature within a few minutes, and the challenge comes from keeping that rhythm while the screen fills up.

Its pedigree is remarkable. Irem's 1984 arcade original, Kung-Fu Master (Spartan X in Japan), was designed by Takashi Nishiyama, who went on to direct the first Street Fighter, and it borrowed its five-story structure from Bruce Lee's Game of Death and its hero's name from Jackie Chan's character in Wheels on Meals. It is widely regarded as the first beat 'em up and helped set the template for the end-of-level boss. Nintendo handled the home conversion itself with Shigeru Miyamoto directing, and Miyamoto has said the work helped inspire Super Mario Bros.

Kung Fu reached North America in October 1985, among the very first wave of NES games, so for a generation of players it was part of the console's earliest library. Its sharp controls and quick sessions make it a joy to pick up on original hardware, and a direct link between the arcade's first brawler and the Mario game it helped inspire.
