Item Description
Before Mario Kart ever reached the Game Boy Advance, Konami got there first. Konami Krazy Racers was ready for the system's North American launch in June 2001, and it answered a question nobody knew they wanted to ask: what happens when Dracula, a Gradius Moai head and Metal Gear's Gray Fox line up on the same starting grid?
That roster is the whole joke and the whole charm. Goemon and Ebisumaru from Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Pastel from TwinBee, Vic Viper from Gradius, Takosuke from Parodius, Nyami and King from Pop'n Music, Beartank from Rakugakids and Power Pro-kun from the Power Pros baseball series all chase the checkered flag, a lineup that doubles as a tour of Konami's catalog at the turn of the millennium. Sixteen courses, from Cyber Field and Ice Paradise to Pop 'n Beach and Skybridge, give them plenty of room to collide.
On the track it has its own wrinkles. Every circuit fields eight racers and you start dead last, with your grid position in later races set by how you finished earlier ones, so a strong opener pays off all cup long. Red bells hold a grab bag of items, blue bells give an instant burst of speed, and coins scattered around each course can be spent in a shop on items, which makes a clean racing line worth more than just position. You can hop and brake through tight corners, and some characters can send rivals spinning out.
Reviews were warm, and Electronic Gaming Monthly ranked it among its ten best Game Boy Advance games. Some critics preferred Nintendo's Super Circuit when it arrived a few months later, but Krazy Racers offers something Mario Kart never could: Konami's own all-stars trading paint with each other. For a Konami fan, it's a delightful time capsule from the GBA's very first summer.
