Magic: The Gathering single: Kokusho, the Evening Star, from From the Vault: Dragons. Our grade: Lightly Played or better. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
When Kokusho dies, the whole table feels it. This six-mana 5/5 flying Dragon Spirit makes each opponent lose 5 life and gives you every point of it back, so in a four-player Commander game one death drains fifteen life from the table and adds all fifteen to your total. Opponents are left with an ugly choice: let a big flier keep attacking, or kill it and pay the price.
Kokusho, the Evening Star first appeared in Champions of Kamigawa in 2004 as the black member of the block's five legendary Dragon Spirits, and it was a feared card in tournaments of that era. Under the legend rule of the time, casting a second Kokusho sent both copies to the graveyard, turning one card into a ten-point life swing. Today it shines in black reanimator and aristocrats decks, where sacrifice outlets and Animate Dead-style recursion let you trigger that death drain again and again.
This is the From the Vault: Dragons printing, collector number 9, illustrated by Tsutomu Kawade, in foil. From the Vault: Dragons launched the From the Vault line in 2008 as a foil-only collection of fifteen dragons from across Magic's history, a fitting showcase for the Evening Star.
