Magic: The Gathering single: Kird Ape, from From the Vault: Exiled. Our grade: Lightly Played or better. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
Kird Ape is one-mana efficiency from Magic's earliest days. On its own it is a 1/1 for a single red mana, but as long as you control a Forest it becomes a 2/3, a body that attacks early and blocks well for its cost. In a red-green deck that is nearly always on, and dual lands with the Forest type count too.
That simple design has kept Kird Ape in aggressive red-green decks since it first appeared in Arabian Nights in 1993, and it is a lovely card for cube, casual Gruul builds and anyone who enjoys old-school Magic. There is real charm in a card this old still pulling its weight. The flavor text puts it nicely: “Apes can be gentle, contemplative beasts—but context is everything.”
This is the From the Vault: Exiled printing, collector number 6, a foil illustrated by Terese Nielsen. From the Vault: Exiled was a 2009 collection of fifteen foil cards, each of which had been banned or restricted at some point in Magic's history, which gives this little Ape some interesting company.
