Item Description

Everything in Patch Land is made of fabric, Kirby included. After the sorcerer Yin-Yarn turns him into yarn and sends him to this stitched-together world, Kirby trades his famous inhale for a yarn whip and a body that unravels into new shapes: a car for speeding along, a parachute for drifting down, a heavy weight for smashing through blocks. Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn is Nintendo's expanded 3DS version of Good-Feel's 2010 Wii favorite, and its hand-sewn world of felt, buttons, zippers and patchwork looks wonderful on the handheld.

The original was famous for being impossible to lose. Kirby cannot run out of lives, and the real challenge is holding on to the beads you collect, which scatter when you take damage. Extra Epic Yarn keeps that relaxed core but adds teeth for players who want them. Devilish Mode sends devils to harass Kirby through every stage while he works with a limited health bar, and clearing those stages earns dozens of new pieces of furniture. New Ravel Abilities, such as Wire, Button and Knitting Needles, give Kirby copy-style powers woven into the yarn theme, and the beads you gather go toward decorating Kirby's Pad.

Two new sub-games give other stars their turn. Slash & Bead sends Meta Knight flying through auto-scrolling courses, slicing enemies and popping balloons for beads, while Dedede GoGoGo has King Dedede racing through fast-paced courses as quickly as he can. Both add a quicker, score-chasing counterpoint to the gentle main adventure, and both feed into the game's collection of bead crafts for completionists.

Much of the charm comes from the presentation: a narrator tells the story like a picture book, and the soft, piano-led soundtrack suits the craft-room visuals perfectly. Prince Fluff, Patch Land's young ruler, is still the friend at the heart of the story, though this version is built as a single-player adventure. Released in 2019, Extra Epic Yarn was one of the last major Nintendo releases for the 3DS, a gentle late-era send-off for the system and the handheld way to enjoy Kirby's most distinctive art style.
