Item Description
For Kirby's 20th anniversary, HAL Laboratory and Nintendo did something fans had wanted for years and gathered the pink puffball's early adventures onto a single Wii disc. Kirby's Dream Collection: Special Edition brings together six classic games from the Game Boy, NES, Super NES and Nintendo 64, and playing them in order is like watching a series discover its personality in real time.
It starts with Kirby's Dream Land, the 1992 Game Boy original, before Kirby's Adventure on the NES introduces the copy abilities that would define the character from then on. Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3 bring in animal friends like Rick the hamster, Kine the fish and Coo the owl, Kirby Super Star packs a whole anthology of games and modes into one cartridge, and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards lets you fuse abilities into wild new combinations. Every game is set up to play with the Wii Remote held sideways, and the Classic Controller and GameCube controller work too.
The extras make it more than a simple compilation. A set of brand-new challenge stages, built in the style of Kirby's Return to Dream Land, tests your speed and skill with specific copy abilities, and a museum-style history section walks through Kirby's first two decades year by year, alongside episodes of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. It is the kind of thorough, affectionate tribute HAL rarely gets the chance to make.
The collection was released in Japan and North America but never in Europe, a detail that gives this anniversary release a special place in Kirby collecting. More than that, it is the easiest way to play the series' formative years on one console, from the monochrome Game Boy days to the polygonal worlds of Crystal Shards, and a reminder of how inventive HAL has always been with such a simple hero.
