Most Kirby games give you one adventure. Kirby Super Star gave you a whole box of them, and the Nintendo DS remake opens that box even wider. HAL Laboratory's 2008 Kirby Super Star Ultra rebuilds the 1996 Super Nintendo favorite with crisp new sprite work and fully animated CG cutscenes, then piles new modes on top until the main menu feels like a dessert cart: short, punchy campaigns, each with its own rules, its own tone and its own reason to play just one more.

The original lineup is all here in fresh paint. Spring Breeze retells Kirby's first trip through Dream Land in miniature, Gourmet Race pits him against King Dedede in a frantic eat-everything sprint, and Dyna Blade sends him after a giant bird terrorizing the countryside. The Great Cave Offensive turns the game into a sprawling treasure hunt through crystal caverns, an old tower and an underground garden. Revenge of Meta Knight plays out against the clock aboard the battleship Halberd while Meta Knight's crew panics in running commentary, and Milky Way Wishes trades swallowed powers for collectible copy essences on a tour of distant planets that ends in a showdown with Marx.

What makes it all click is how much Kirby can do. Super Star is the game that turned his copy abilities from single tricks into full move sets, so Sword, Fighter, Yo-Yo, Jet and the rest each play like a small character of their own. Any ability can also be spun off into a Helper, a partner run by the computer or by a friend over local wireless, which makes the whole package a natural two-player game.

Ultra's additions are the reason to own this version. Revenge of the King is a longer, much tougher remix of Spring Breeze with a masked Dedede waiting at the end. Meta Knightmare Ultra lets Meta Knight slash through the earlier adventures with his own special moves, building toward a duel with Galacta Knight. Helper to Hero puts you in a Helper's shoes for a boss rush, and The True Arena is the hardest gauntlet in the game, with the new final boss Marx Soul at the top. Samurai Kirby and Megaton Punch return as quick sub-games, joined by three new touch-screen mini-games that up to four players can share through DS Download Play. It is the fullest way to play the game many longtime fans consider the high point of the series.
