Item Description

Necrodeus doesn't just defeat Kirby. He splits him into ten. Kirby: Mass Attack opens with the leader of the Skull Gang shattering the pink hero into a crowd of tiny copies, and the rest of the adventure is a chase across Popstar to round up the squad, catch Necrodeus and make Kirby whole again. HAL Laboratory's 2011 DS adventure is one of the boldest experiments the series has tried, and it plays like nothing else carrying the Kirby name.

There is no D-pad control here at all. The entire game is played with the stylus: tap to move the group, tap an enemy to send the Kirbys piling on, double-tap to make them run, and flick individual Kirbys to launch them at foes, blocks and switches. Each Kirby can take two hits before turning into a floating, angelic ghost, and the rest of the crew can fling themselves upward to rescue it. Eating fruit grows the team back toward the full ten, and plenty of obstacles need a crowd before they will budge, so keeping your swarm healthy matters.

That turns every stage into a little exercise in tactics, closer to a puzzle-action game than a standard platformer, and HAL fills the levels with secrets. There are 168 hidden medals to hunt down, and collecting them unlocks a surprising stack of extras: Kirby Brawlball, a full pinball table; Strato Patrol EOS, an overhead shoot-'em-up; Kirby Quest, a timing-based battler; Field Frenzy, a Whack-a-Mole spin; and more, along with a music player and a secret checklist of challenges.

Critics loved it, and it still feels fresh. The bright, rounded art and cheerful music are pure HAL, but the swarm mechanic gives each stage a playful sense of strategy, and the unlockable games alone would have made a respectable cartridge. Mass Attack is the Kirby game built entirely around what the DS touchscreen could do, and it never received a sequel, which keeps this a singular stop in Kirby's long history.
