Item Description

Kira, Great Glass-Spinner is a lesson in making your opponent's removal fail. Kira is a three-mana 2/2 flyer whose real job is to make every creature you control a headache to target. Each of your creatures gains a simple shield: the first time it becomes the target of a spell or ability each turn, that spell or ability is countered. Your opponent's removal suddenly costs double, because the first Doom Blade or Swords to Plowshares aimed at anything on your side is simply countered, Kira included, and they have to spend a second card to finish the job.

The shield works on your own spells too, so auras, pump spells and equip abilities need a cheap first target to break the seal. Equip twice, or lead with a throwaway trick, and you are through. That trade-off is part of the fun: a well-built deck makes the drawback nearly invisible, while opponents have to rethink every targeted answer. In Commander, Kira gives a creature deck strong protection against single-target removal and makes your best creatures feel twice as hard to answer.

Modern Masters, the 2013 set that launched Wizards' line of Masters reprint products, gathered favorite cards from the previous decade, and Kira earned a spot. This is the Modern Masters printing, collector number 49, a rare illustrated by Kev Walker, offered in non-foil.
