Ten years before Sora ever picked up a Keyblade, three friends trained together in the Land of Departure under Master Eraqus. Terra was the strongest of them and the most tempted by power. Aqua was disciplined and steady. Ventus, the youngest, carried a past he could not remember. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is the story of how that bond was tested and broken, and it explains more about the series' central mysteries than almost any other entry. For a PSP game it is startlingly ambitious: three separate campaigns, each following one Keyblade wielder through the Disney worlds, crossing paths and revisiting the same events from new angles until everything converges at the Keyblade Graveyard.

Birth by Sleep also reinvented how Kingdom Hearts plays. Instead of a fixed menu, you build a Command Deck of attacks, magic and techniques to fire off at will, and fighting well fills a gauge that unlocks Command Styles, which transform your basic combo into powerful Surge and then Storm finishers. Shotlocks let you lock onto a crowd of enemies for a screen-filling volley, Dimension Links borrow the power of friends you have met along the way, and melding commands together creates new ones, so each character's deck can grow into something very personal.

The worlds lean into classic Disney animation. Their journeys run through Enchanted Dominion with Maleficent, Cinderella's Castle of Dreams and the Dwarf Woodlands of Snow White, as well as Neverland, Olympus Coliseum and Radiant Garden. Deep Space introduces a mischievous Experiment 626, and Disney Town is a cheerful break full of side games like Fruitball and Rumble Racing. Shadowing it all are the scheming Master Xehanort, the masked Vanitas and the strange creatures called the Unversed. There is a full Command Board minigame on the side, the Mirage Arena for local wireless play, and Yoko Shimomura's music tying it together.

Directed by Tetsuya Nomura and built by Square Enix's Osaka-based team, Birth by Sleep was a PSP exclusive at launch and was only later brought to home consoles in the HD 2.5 ReMIX collection. Nearly every thread that leads to Kingdom Hearts III runs through this game, from Aqua's fate to Xehanort's long plan, and the PSP release is where their story was first told in full, the prequel that rewired the whole saga on the handheld it was made for.

About the game

Birth by Sleep is an action roleplaying game that introduces a gameplay aspect called the Command System, which allows players to customize a Command Deck with techniques and abilities that they can perform at will, called Deck Commands. Performing ordinary attacks and Commands fills a gauge displayed above the command deck that, when certain requirements are fulfilled, activates a Command Style that changes the player's basic attack command with the "Surge" command, which racks up powerful combos depending on what Command Style is activated. Filling the gauge with certain requirements a second time causes the character to change into an even higher level Command Style, which replaces the "Surge" command with the more powerful "Storm" command.
