Item Description
Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami have been trying to destroy each other since 1995, and this collection lets you watch the whole feud take shape. The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga gathers five complete SNK fighters on one PSP disc, KOF '94 through KOF '98, emulated from the original Neo Geo games, covering the stretch that turned a crossover experiment into one of the great fighting game series.
The hook from the start was the team format. Instead of picking one fighter, you choose a squad of three and send them out in order, so every match becomes a small exercise in strategy: who opens, who anchors, who you save for the comeback. KOF '94 launched the idea with fixed national teams drawn from Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier, a dream crossover for SNK fans. Each year after that rebuilt the systems and reshuffled the roster, from the overhauled movement of '96 to the Advanced and Extra modes of '97, which let players pick between two distinct styles of meter and evasion.
Running through the middle is the Orochi story itself. '95 introduces Iori and his rivalry with Kyo, '96 brings in Chizuru Kagura and the menacing Goenitz, and '97 pays it all off with the Orochi team and the ancient god waiting at the end. Then '98 drops the plot entirely for a dream match that reunites fighters from across the earlier games, and many players still treat it as the high point of the series' sprite era. Rugal Bernstein, the boss of '94 and '95, is here too, ready to remind everyone what SNK boss syndrome feels like.
On the PSP every game launches from one menu, and a Challenge mode sets special conditions, such as winning a fight with the life bars and on-screen gauges switched off, rewarding you with unlockable artwork and music in a gallery. Five Neo Geo fighters in your pocket, each a snapshot of how 2D fighting evolved through the late 1990s, is a far more practical prospect than a shelf of arcade boards.
