Item Description

Commanding an army usually means menus and maps. In King Arthur's World it means watching a column of tiny soldiers march out of the king's tent and hoping you gave them the right orders. Argonaut Software, the British studio that worked with Nintendo on Star Fox, built this side-scrolling strategy game for the Super Nintendo, and Jaleco published it in North America in 1993.

Each level begins at Arthur's tent, where you call out troops as you need them: knights, archers, engineers and more. Units march in their set direction until you give them new orders, they fall, or they run into enemies and fight, and specialists have commands of their own, such as archers loosing volleys of arrows. The goal is to get Arthur from his tent to the far end of the level past enemy forces, traps and obstacles, and he is the one soldier you cannot afford to lose. If he falls, it costs 100 gold coins to rescue him and send him back to the tent.

The blend of puzzle and strategy invites comparisons to Lemmings, but the flavor is all Arthurian adventure. The campaign carries you from battlefields held by dark knights down to the orcs of the underworld and up among the cloud giants, with passwords saving your progress between levels and music by Justin Scharvona. It is also one of the few games to support the Super NES Mouse, and pointing and clicking your orders across the battlefield makes it feel like a computer strategy game that found its way onto a console.

King Arthur's World slipped through the cracks of Super Nintendo history, which makes it a rewarding find today. Nothing else on the console plays quite like it, and it suits players who would rather outthink a level than outrun it.
