Item Description
Kataki, War's Wage turns every artifact on the battlefield into a subscription. All artifacts gain the upkeep cost "sacrifice this artifact unless you pay {1}," so mana rocks, equipment, Treasure, Clue and Food tokens all start charging rent. For an artifact-heavy deck that is a crushing tax, because paying for a dozen artifacts every upkeep is impossible, while a deck light on artifacts barely notices.
That makes this two-mana 2/1 legendary Spirit a classic sideboard answer and a sneaky Commander inclusion for white decks facing token and rock-heavy tables. Just remember the effect is symmetrical, so build around it rather than into it. Kataki first appeared in Betrayers of Kamigawa, and his flavor text tells of soldiers who once prayed to him to sharpen their swords and harden their armor, only to find their weapons nearly useless against the kami hordes once his blessing was gone.
This is the Modern Event Deck 2014 printing, collector number 24, illustrated by Matt Thompson, in non-foil. That product, March of the Multitudes, was a ready-to-play white-black tokens deck with a sideboard for Modern, and Kataki came along as one of its tools against artifact strategies.
