Item Description
Long before he became a planeswalker, Karn was a silver golem built by Urza, and this is the card that introduced him to Magic back in Urza's Saga. He is a strange, lovable piece of design: a five-mana colorless 4/4 that turns into a 0/8 wall the moment it blocks or becomes blocked, which makes him a sturdy defender who hits for four whenever the opponent lets him through.
The real fun is his second ability. For a single generic mana, Karn turns any noncreature artifact into an artifact creature with power and toughness equal to its mana value until end of turn. Point it at your own artifacts and an artifact-heavy board suddenly becomes an attacking army. Point it at an opponent's and their pricey relic is now a creature your removal can hit, while a zero-cost artifact animated this way simply dies as a 0/0. Being colorless, Karn slots into any Commander deck that leans on artifacts, and he is a natural fit for cube lists built around Urza's Saga-era nostalgia.
This is the From the Vault: Relics printing, collector number 6, illustrated by Mark Zug, in foil. Relics was the 2010 entry in the From the Vault series, a boxed collection of fifteen classic artifacts reprinted entirely in foil, and Karn's golem body catches that shine beautifully.
