Item Description
Karlov of the Ghost Council costs just two mana and grows absurdly fast in the right deck. Every time you gain life he gets two +1/+1 counters, so a lifelink hit, a Soul Warden trigger or a drain spell all pump him up. Once he has six counters, one white and one black mana plus those six counters exile target creature, and then he starts climbing again.
Because each separate life-gain event is its own trigger, small, frequent sources of life are worth more with Karlov than one big burst. In white-black life-gain and aristocrats decks he is both an early threat and a repeatable removal spell, and in Commander he rewards the drain-and-gain effects Orzhov players already love.
Karlov is the patriarch of the Orzhov's Ghost Council and grandfather of Teysa Karlov, and his flavor text hints at the family's scheming: "Does Teysa think me blind to her scheming? Ambition runs in our family." This is the Commander 2015 printing, collector number 46, illustrated by Volkan Baǵa, in non-foil.
