Item Description

Foretell is one of the most satisfying mechanics Kaldheim ever introduced: pay two mana to tuck a card face down in exile, then cast it later at a discount while your opponents wonder what is coming. Phantom Premonition builds an entire Commander deck around that feeling, led by Ranar the Ever-Watchful in white and blue.

Ranar makes the first card you foretell each turn cost nothing to foretell, and every time you exile cards from your hand or permanents from the battlefield, it leaves behind a 1/1 flying Spirit. That second ability is the clever part. Foretell feeds it, but so does flickering your own creatures, which turns a sky full of Spirits into a real win condition rather than a side effect.

The deck introduced a set of new cards that made it a favorite pickup for Commander players. Ethereal Valkyrie gets value whenever it enters or attacks, Hero of Bretagard grows with every card and permanent you exile, Cosmic Intervention can be foretold and later cast cheaply to save your board from a wipe, and Spectral Deluge clears out opposing creatures while leaving yours standing. Tales of the Ancestors and Sage of the Beyond keep the cards flowing.

It plays like a patient control deck with a hidden hand of tricks, which is exactly the Norse-flavored mood Kaldheim was built on. For a Commander shelf, it is a sealed snapshot of the 2021 precon lineup.
