Item Description
Every spell has a price at Kaervek's table. Kaervek the Merciless is a seven-mana black-red 5/4, and whenever an opponent casts a spell, he deals damage equal to that spell's mana value to any target. Their six-drop becomes six damage to their own face, a blocker, a planeswalker or another player entirely.
In multiplayer Commander that trigger fires for every spell from every opponent, so a single Kaervek can tax an entire table. Cheap spells still sting, big spells hurt badly, and opponents are left choosing between casting nothing or feeding you removal and burn on their own turns. He's a natural commander or centerpiece for Rakdos control and punisher decks, where the plan is to make the game miserable for everyone else.
He comes from Magic's Mirage-era story, and the flavor text from his old enemy Mangara sets the mood: "Rats and jackals feast in his swath, but even they will not walk with him." This is the Double Masters 2022 etched-foil printing, collector number 512, illustrated by rk post.
