Item Description

Kabutops was the payoff for anyone patient enough to evolve a fossil in 1999. The scythe-armed Shellfish Pokémon is a Stage 2 Fighting card with 60 HP in the Fossil set, and its holofoil art comes from Ken Sugimori, the designer behind the original look of Pokémon itself.

Its attacks lean into the predator theme. Sharp Sickle hits for 30 with two Fighting Energy, and Absorb, a move Kabutops learns in the games, does 40 for four Fighting Energy while removing damage counters from Kabutops equal to half the damage dealt, rounded up. Weak to Grass with a Retreat Cost of one, it's a fun, toothy evolution line to build from the Mysterious Fossil, and its Pokédex entry is wonderfully grim: "It slashes prey with its claws and drains the body fluids." Fossil was the third English expansion, and its holos are still the heart of many first-generation collections.

This is the Fossil printing, collector number 9/62, a holofoil illustrated by Ken Sugimori.
