Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

The Mad Bomber grins down from the top of the screen, and as soon as the first bomb drops you know you are in for a fight. Kaboom!, released by Activision in 1981, is one of the purest reflex tests ever put on a cartridge: catch every falling bomb in your stack of water buckets before it hits the ground, while the Bomber races back and forth faster and more erratically with every wave.

Kaboom! is designed around the Atari paddle controller, and that is the secret of its appeal. The paddle's dial gives you smooth, instant control over your buckets that a joystick simply cannot match, so when the bombs start raining down in later rounds, your hands really do feel connected to the screen. You start with three buckets, lose one every time a bomb gets through, and win them back every 1,000 points, so the game constantly swings between disaster and recovery. The difficulty climbs steadily through its higher levels until the Bomber is dropping bombs at a speed that feels almost unfair, and you will still want one more try.

Larry Kaplan designed and programmed the game, adapting the idea from Atari's 1978 coin-op Avalanche, while David Crane drew the Mad Bomber and coded the changing facial expressions that react to how your round is going. It won Best Audio-Visual Effects at the 1982 Arcade Awards, sold more than a million cartridges, and GameSpy later called it one of the most addictive and entrancing twitch games ever made. If there is a set of 2600 paddles in the house, this is the first cartridge they should meet.

About the game

Kaboom! is an unauthorized adaptation of the 1978 Atari coin-op Avalanche. The gameplay of both games is fundamentally the same, but Kaboom! was re-themed to be about a mad bomber instead of falling rocks. Gameplay in Kaboom! consists of using a paddle controller to catch bombs dropped by the Mad Bomber with a set of three buckets. Points are scored for every bomb caught, extra buckets (maximum of three) are awarded at every 1,000 points, and one bucket is lost every time a bomb is missed. As the game progresses, the "Mad Bomber" traverses the top of the screen much more erratically, dropping bombs at increasingly higher speeds, making each of the seven higher levels more difficult.
