Item Description

Desert Strike ended one war; Jungle Strike brings the fight home. This time Ibn Kilbaba, son of the first game's dictator, has joined forces with the drug lord Carlos Ortega with Washington, D.C. in their sights, and the campaign builds to a finale in the capital where four nuclear-armed trucks have to be stopped before they reach their targets. It is pure early-'90s action-movie plotting, and the Genesis plays it with total conviction.

Your main ride is a fictionalized Comanche attack helicopter, seen from the series' trademark isometric angle and armed with machine guns, Hydra rockets and Hellfire missiles. The heavier the weapon, the fewer rounds you carry, so deciding what to fire at what is half the battle. Each level is a set of objectives spread across a large, open map, and the real enemy is often your gauges. Armor drains with every hit and comes back only through pickups or by airlifting rescued captives to the landing zone, fuel burns steadily until you find barrels, and ammo crates have to be hunted down. Every sortie becomes a tense calculation of how far you can push before turning back, because running dry on fuel or armor costs a life just as surely as a missile.

The big step up from Desert Strike is variety. Certain missions take you out of the helicopter and put you on a motorbike or a hovercraft, and one hands you an F-117 stealth fighter with unlimited ammunition, adjustable altitude and an alarming tendency to meet the ground. Switching vehicles keeps the formula fresh across the whole campaign.

Designed by John Manley and Tony Barnes, with music by Brian Schmidt, Jungle Strike spent three months as a Mega Drive best-seller and drew rave reviews, including scores of 94 and 96 percent from Sega Force. It is the Strike series at its peak on the Genesis: bigger and more varied than the original, while keeping the deliberate, resource-minded style that set these games apart from every other shooter of the era.
