Item Description

Timing the leap from one swinging vine to the next is the first thing Jungle Hunt asks of you, and it sets the rhythm for everything that follows. Atari's 2600 translation of Taito's 1982 arcade hit casts you as Sir Dudley, a pith-helmeted explorer racing through the jungle to rescue his wife, Lady Penelope, from the cannibals who have carried her off.

The rescue unfolds across four distinct scenes. First comes the forest, where vines swing at different speeds and reward a patient eye. Then Dudley dives into a crocodile-filled river, stabbing at snapping jaws with a well-timed press of the button while an air gauge forces him back to the surface before his breath runs out. A boulder field follows, with small rocks giving way to big, bouncing boulders that have to be jumped or ducked, and finally a pair of spear-carrying cannibals guards the camp. The reunion is brief, because the jungle is waiting to do it all over again.

The arcade original began life as Jungle King with a Tarzan-style hero before Taito retooled it into Jungle Hunt and its safari-suited explorer, and it was among the first games to use parallax scrolling. The 2600 version cannot match that layered depth, but it answers with vivid colors and detailed jungle backdrops that make it one of the better-looking arcade ports on the system. Four very different challenges in a single compact loop give it a pick-up-and-play pull, and the boulder and cannibal stages offer a real test of timing for anyone chasing a longer run.

About the game

Jungle Hunt is side-scrolling arcade game produced and released by Taito in 1982. It was initially released as Jungle King. Jungle Hunt is one of the first video games to use parallax scrolling. The player controls an unnamed jungle explorer sporting a pith helmet and a safari suit. The player attempts to rescue his girl from a tribe of hungry cannibals by swinging from vine to vine, swimming a crocodile-infested river, jumping over or ducking beneath rolling rocks, then releasing the girl before she is lowered into a boiling cauldron. Home versions were released for the Apple II, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 8-bit family, Commodore 64, ColecoVision, VIC-20, and IBM PC. The PC version was developed by Sierra On-Line and is incompatible with everything except an original IBM PC/XT with a CGA video card. In the Atari-ported versions the hero is named Sir Dudley, and the girl, married to Sir Dudley, is Lady Penelope.
