Stand on the beach at Sandover Village, look up, and the volcano in the distance is not a painted backdrop. You can walk there. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy built a whole island chain that streams together without loading screens, so you can wander from the village to Sentinel Beach, out to Misty Island or up toward the mountains in one unbroken run while the sun sets and rises overhead. In 2001 that seamless world felt like a magic trick, and it still gives the game a wonderful sense of place.

Naughty Dog's first PS2 adventure, following its Crash Bandicoot years, starts with a dare gone wrong. Jak's best friend Daxter tumbles into a vat of Dark Eco and comes out as an ottsel, a small, orange, very indignant cross between an otter and a weasel. The search for a cure sends the silent Jak and his wisecracking passenger out under the guidance of Samos the Sage and his daughter Keira, and before long it uncovers a scheme by the sinister siblings Gol and Maia. Daxter never stops talking from his perch on Jak's shoulder, and his running commentary is a huge part of the charm.

The play itself is a generous mix. Tight platforming and punch-and-spin combat sit alongside Zoomer runs across Fire Canyon, fishing, boss fights and plenty of helping villagers with their odd little problems. Power Cells open the path forward, and Precursor Orbs and scout flies are tucked into every corner for the completionists. Blue, red, yellow and green Eco give Jak temporary powers, from bursts of speed to long-range blasts, which keeps even familiar areas feeling playful.

This is where the series began, and it is the lightest, brightest chapter of it. Jak II would take the series in a darker, open-city direction, so the original stands apart as the pure collect-a-thon platformer, the sunny island adventure that showed what the PS2 could do in its first year. Rolling into Sandover on original hardware, with no load screen between you and that volcano, is still a treat.
