Years before Rumble in the Bronx made Jackie Chan a box-office star in America, the NES got a game built around his screen persona, and it understood him surprisingly well. Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu isn't a grim brawler. It is bright, quick and playful, with a hero who flips and kicks his way through a world of sorcery the way Jackie's films turn danger into choreography.
The story is straight out of a kung fu fantasy. Jackie and his sister Josephine have long guarded China against the Prince of Sorcerers, until the villain's spell makes Josephine vanish and his demon horde storms the Great Wall. Across five levels, each ending with a boss, Jackie punches and kicks through the Sorcerer's minions, and the game layers smart little systems on top. Hitting the frogs that appear in each stage releases power-ups or rice bowls that restore health. Special attacks come in limited supplies and you can carry only one type at a time, so choosing when to spend them matters. Defeated enemies drop green orbs, and collecting thirty refills both your health and your charged energy shots. Find a bell and you're whisked off to a thirty-second bonus stage, bouncing on clouds or smashing statues for points you can trade for extra lives, special attacks and continues.
Developed by Now Production and published by Hudson Soft, it arrived on the NES in North America in December 1990, with a TurboGrafx-16 version following. Critics liked it, and GamePro scored the NES version 23 out of 25. The large, expressive sprites and lively animation are a big part of the appeal, giving Jackie real personality at a time when many action heroes moved in a handful of stiff frames.
It is a rare celebrity tie-in that feels made by people who enjoyed the source, and it plays like one of Jackie's own fight scenes: fast, funny and a little bit showy. Late-era NES action doesn't get much more charming.
Jackie and his sister, Josephine, are tough on tyrants. As China's supreme kung fu champs, they guard their country against the Prince of Sorcerers, who lurks just beyond the Great Wall. It comes as no surprise when this fiend and his ghouls try yet again to seize China for themselves. But this time they're clever, casting a spell over Josephine which causes her to vanish into thin air! Jackie is in shock! How can he save his country without his sister? The two have been an unbeatable team! Meanwhile, a demon horde led by the Sorcerer storms the Great Wall and prepares to establish a fierce empire. At the urging of his revered Master, Jackie must now battle the dreaded Sorcerer and rescue Josephine. Maybe he can learn a little magic on his own, because he's going to need all the help he can get!
