Item Description
Ivory Tower rewards a full grip. At the beginning of your upkeep, the one-mana artifact gains you life equal to the number of cards in your hand minus four, so holding seven cards means three life every turn, and a deck that ignores maximum hand size can turn it into a serious life engine.
It first appeared in Antiquities back in 1994, and its appeal is the same today. Pair it with Reliquary Tower or Spellbook to lift the hand-size cap, or drop it into a blue Commander deck full of draw engines and wheel effects, and the life gain scales with every card you hold. It is cheap, colorless and hard for opponents to justify removing, which lets it quietly buy turns for control decks while they set up. The flavor text sums up the bargain: “Valuing scholarship above all else, the inhabitants of the Ivory Tower reward those who sacrifice power for knowledge.”
