Item Description

Marvel's armored Avenger and Valiant Comics' armored barbarian were never supposed to share a page, let alone a Game Gear cartridge. Iron Man and X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal came out of the years when Acclaim owned Valiant, and the result is one of the most unusual comic crossovers in 90s gaming.

The plot is pure comic-book escalation: a team of supervillains is hunting down the lost fragments of the Cosmic Cube, and the two heroes join forces to stop them, while the alien race that X-O Manowar's armor was taken from wants it back. You pick either hero and head into side-scrolling action, punching, firing unlimited energy beams and taking to the air on a limited, replenishable fuel supply, with Iron Man ducking under fire while X-O Manowar blocks it with his shield. Developed by Realtime Associates and released in 1996, the Game Gear version arrived right at the end of the handheld's commercial life.

It was not a critical darling. Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewers liked the animation but criticized the controls and the lack of variety in the levels, and that is worth knowing going in. The appeal now is the sheer novelty of the matchup. This is a time capsule from the height of the 90s comic boom, when Valiant was a hot name in comics and a crossover like this felt like an event, and it makes a fun, offbeat conversation piece on a Marvel or Game Gear shelf.
