Item Description

When the Game Boy Advance was brand new in North America in June 2001, Iridion 3D was one of the games that showed what its wide, colorful screen could do. The small Munich studio Shin'en built a forward-scrolling rail shooter in the mold of Star Fox, hurling your ship down corridors of shifting color while enemy fighters and huge bosses swoop in from the horizon. It isn't true 3D, since the illusion comes from scaled 2D sprites and looping backgrounds, but in motion it looked startlingly modern next to the Game Boy Color games most players were coming from.

The design is pure arcade. Seven linear levels each end in a boss, the ship moves at a fixed speed, and you rarely need more than the D-pad and the fire button. Several weapon types, each with its own power levels, reward you for staying alive long enough to build a full arsenal, and a steady parade of new enemy designs keeps the attack waves shifting. Manfred Linzner's pulsing electronic soundtrack is the other star, running on Shin'en's own GAX sound engine, which squeezed rich music into a sliver of cartridge space and left more room for the visuals.

Critics were split on the gameplay, but the graphics and music won it plenty of fans. It also launched Shin'en's long run of technically fearless games, from Iridion II in 2003 and Nanostray on the DS to the studio's later racers on Nintendo's home consoles. Iridion 3D is where that story starts, and a vivid time capsule of the GBA's launch window.
