Item Description
Inkshield is the instant that makes a huge attack look like a mistake. For five mana, prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to you this turn, then create a 2/1 white and black Inkling with flying for each point of damage prevented. An opponent who swings fifteen damage at you hands you fifteen flying Inklings for the counterattack.
It is at its best in multiplayer Commander, where the biggest board at the table often turns on whoever looks weakest. Token decks can multiply the payoff with anthems, sacrifice outlets put the Inklings to work, and white-black players get a fog effect that ends up feeling like a sweeper in reverse. It comes from Commander 2021, the decks built around Strixhaven's five colleges, and its Silverquill roots show in the flavor text: "Silverquill's elite know how to offer a scathing rebuttal without uttering a word." This is the Commander 2021 printing, collector number 71, illustrated by Jarel Threat, in non-foil.
