Item Description
Leave one attacker unblocked against an Ink-Eyes player and you may regret it for the rest of the game. Ninjutsu is the trick: for five mana, return an unblocked attacker you control to your hand and put Ink-Eyes onto the battlefield tapped and attacking as a 5/4 Rat Ninja. When Ink-Eyes deals combat damage to a player, you may put a creature card from that player's graveyard onto the battlefield under your control, and a two-mana regeneration ability helps it survive to do it again.
Ink-Eyes comes from Betrayers of Kamigawa, the set that introduced ninjutsu, and it has been a favorite of black ninja decks ever since. In Commander it slots into Ninja strategies built on cheap evasive creatures, and into any black deck that enjoys turning opponents' graveyards into its own resource. Multiplayer games fill graveyards quickly, so every hit is a chance to steal the best creature the table has already lost. Flyers, unblockable creatures and anything that discourages blocking make it connect far more often.
This is the Planechase Anthology printing, collector number 33, illustrated by Wayne Reynolds, in non-foil. Reynolds' energetic, detail-packed style suits a rat-folk assassin perfectly, and this printing comes from the 2016 collection built around Planechase's planar multiplayer variant.
