What if Superman snapped? Injustice: Gods Among Us builds its entire world on that question. After the Joker tricks him into a devastating tragedy in Metropolis, the Man of Steel kills the Clown Prince of Crime and seizes control of the planet, ruling through a Regime of former heroes. Batman leads an Insurgency against him, and when heroes from the familiar DC universe are pulled into this darker reality, they find twisted reflections of themselves on both sides of the war.
NetherRealm Studios, the team behind the Mortal Kombat revival, built the story mode as a fully voiced, chapter-by-chapter campaign that hands control from one character to the next, and it plays like a feature-length DC animated film. The roster brings together Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Harley Quinn, Nightwing, Cyborg, Solomon Grundy and more, and every fighter has a dedicated character power button that changes how they play, like Batman calling in a swarm of mechanical bats.
The arenas are part of the fight. Fighters can grab objects from the background, slam opponents into scenery and launch them through walls into entirely new areas of the stage in spectacular transitions. Clashes let both players wager super meter in a mid-match showdown, complete with trash talk between the two characters, and S.T.A.R. Labs offers a long run of character-specific missions alongside the arcade-style Battle mode.
Injustice was a big enough hit to spawn a long-running prequel comic and the sequel Injustice 2, and its alternate-universe story has become a fan favorite in its own right. On the Wii U it gives Nintendo players a DC fighting game with real depth: approachable enough to throw Batman across the Hall of Justice on day one, and technical enough to keep you practicing combos for weeks.
