Item Description

Indiana Jones practically begs to be a side-scroller. He has a whip for swinging across chasms, fists for settling arguments with henchmen, and a talent for ending up on top of moving vehicles. U.S. Gold's Genesis take on The Last Crusade, developed by Tiertex and released in 1992, leans into exactly that, dropping Indy into a run of stages drawn from the 1989 film with the fedora firmly in place.

The levels pull from the movie's most recognizable stretches: winding caves, a level aboard a moving train that recalls the film's circus-train chase, the catacombs, and the halls of a forbidding castle. The whip is Indy's best friend. It cracks at enemies from a useful distance and lets him swing over gaps when he plants his feet, but it loses strength the more you lean on it, so you learn to pick your moments instead of lashing at everything. His punches have very little reach, which turns every close encounter into a question of spacing.

It is only fair to say this is a tough, rough-edged game. Reviewers have been hard on its stiff controls and cheap hits, there are no passwords to fall back on, and even the easy setting puts up a real fight. That difficulty is part of its personality, the kind of stubborn 16-bit challenge that rewards memorizing every pit and patrol, with the film's famous theme pushing you back into the stage one more time.

Its real appeal now is as a piece of Lucasfilm licensing history: The Last Crusade as the Genesis saw it, a natural companion to the film on an Indy collector's shelf, and a satisfying one to finally conquer if you like your retro platformers unforgiving.
