Item Description
Long before handheld sports games had licensed rosters and full seasons, Jaleco took basketball back to the blacktop. In Your Face strips the game down to street ball, offering both 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 matchups with four selectable players in each mode, and it ranks among the earliest basketball games made for a portable system.
The appeal is in the house rules. You can play Winners Out, where the team that scores keeps the ball, or Losers Out, where possession goes to whoever just got scored on, and that one choice changes the whole rhythm of a game. Matches can run on the clock, from one minute up to ten, or race to 10, 15, 20 or 25 points, so a quick game on the bus and a drawn-out grudge match are both on the menu. A second player can join in, which is where the attitude promised by the title really comes alive.
Reviews at the time were lukewarm, and this is a simple, scrappy game rather than a deep simulation. That is part of its charm. In Your Face is a slice of early Game Boy sports history from the days when street-ball swagger and a title with some attitude were enough to sell a cartridge, and it makes a fun oddity next to the bigger licensed hoops games that followed.
