Magic: The Gathering single: Impulse, from From the Vault: Twenty. Our grade: Lightly Played or better. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Impulse is the kind of card blue players fall in love with early. For two mana at instant speed, you look at the top four cards of your library, take the one you want, and put the rest on the bottom in any order. It is not raw card advantage, but it is precision: dig for a land when you are stuck, a counterspell when you need one, or the last combo piece, all at the end of an opponent's turn.
First printed in Visions in 1997, Impulse became a fixture of tempo and control decks for years, and it still earns slots in Commander and cube as a cheap, flexible way to smooth out draws. Its flavor text explains the whole philosophy in one line: "You call it luck. I call it preparation."
This is the From the Vault: Twenty printing, collector number 5, illustrated by Izzy, in foil. From the Vault: Twenty was the 2013 all-foil collection celebrating Magic's twentieth anniversary with twenty cards spanning the game's history, and Impulse earned its place in that lineup as a piece of blue's early identity.
