Picture Link scattering a hundred Bokoblins with one sweep of his sword, then switching instantly to Tetra on the far side of the map to hold a keep before it falls. That is Hyrule Warriors Legends in a nutshell: the sprawling, crowd-clearing combat of Koei Tecmo's Warriors games wrapped in decades of Legend of Zelda history, rebuilt for the Nintendo 3DS with new characters and story content beyond the original Wii U release.
Battles unfold across large maps where keeps change hands, allied commanders call for help and objectives shift mid-fight. Every character carries a distinct weapon and moveset, from Link's sword and shield to Zelda's rapier, Impa's giant blade and Ganondorf's brute strength, and watching the KO counter climb into the hundreds and then the thousands is its own kind of addictive. The headline change in Legends is the ability to swap between heroes on the fly and position them at different points on the map, so you can split your forces, cover more ground and turn what could be pure button-mashing into real battlefield management.
Legends draws heavily on The Wind Waker, adding a new story arc and playable characters including Tetra, the King of Hyrule and Toon Link. It also introduces Linkle, a brand-new heroine who fights with twin crossbows and gets a side story of her own, and brings Skull Kid over from Majora's Mask. Adventure Mode returns with grid maps styled after classic Zelda overworlds, where every square is a battle challenge and the rewards include new weapons and characters to unlock.
Developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja and published by Nintendo in 2016, the game lets heroes and villains from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and The Wind Waker collide in a single story, with the original characters Cia, Lana and Volga stirring up the timeline. Few portable games pack in this much Zelda fan service, and for players who love deep rosters, steady unlocks and the satisfaction of clearing a battlefield single-handedly, Legends squeezes a console-sized crossover onto a 3DS cartridge.
