Few things in a Zelda game feel quite as good as sweeping the Master Sword through a hundred Bokoblins at once. Hyrule Warriors Legends brings that thrill to the 3DS, taking the Koei Tecmo crossover that first hit the Wii U in 2014 and expanding it into a bigger handheld edition, developed by Team Ninja with Omega Force's Dynasty Warriors formula at its core.

Battles are huge and hectic. You charge across sprawling fields, capture keeps, break enemy lines with flashy combo strings and finish giant bosses with weak-point smashes, all while juggling objectives that pop up across the map. The roster pulls heroes and villains from across Zelda history, from Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess to Skyward Sword, and each character fights with a distinct style, which makes experimenting half the fun.

Legends adds a brand-new story arc built around The Wind Waker, with Toon Link, Tetra and the King of Hyrule joining the fight, plus Skull Kid and a fan-favorite original hero, Linkle, who fights with twin crossbows and has her own side story. Being able to switch between characters on the fly and give commands with the touch screen turns each battle into a small strategy game as you position your heroes across the field. Adventure Mode adds a long list of challenge maps styled after classic Zelda overworlds, and My Fairy mode lets you raise and dress up fairy companions that support you in battle.

Much of what Legends introduced carried into the later Definitive Edition on Switch, but this is where the Wind Waker cast and Linkle first joined the party. For a Zelda fan who wants a different kind of Hyrule adventure in their pocket, it is a big, satisfying and wonderfully over-the-top celebration of the series.
