Item Description
The goddesses of Gamindustri usually fight their battles through turn-based menus. In Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed they wade straight into the crowd swinging. This spin-off hands the Neptunia cast to Tamsoft, the studio behind Battle Arena Toshinden and the recent Senran Kagura games, and the result is a fast, colorful hack-and-slash that keeps all of the series' cheeky humor.
The premise is pure Neptunia. Gamindustri is a parody of the console wars, and two news outlets, Famitsu and Dengekiko, named after real Japanese gaming magazines, want stories about the land's goddesses, the CPUs, and their younger sisters, the CPU candidates. That gives Neptune and friends an excuse to take on hand-picked quests, and gives the writers plenty of room for self-aware jokes about the games industry, which reviewers singled out as a strength.
In battle, Square builds combos, Triangle lands heavy hits and holding R opens up a set of skills mapped to the face buttons. Press Cross and your character transforms into her HDD goddess form for a serious power boost. You can head out solo or pair two characters and switch between them mid-fight, and the game has a cheeky risk-and-reward twist: take enough damage and a heroine's outfit starts to tear away, leaving her more vulnerable but more likely to land critical hits.
Quests take place in compact arenas with goals like clearing a set number of enemies, surviving until a boss appears or recovering an item, and a tournament mode and challenge tower add more once the story is done. The main campaign runs about a dozen hours, and RPG Site rated it 7 out of 10 for its energy and writing. For Neptunia fans who wanted to see Neptune, Noire, Blanc and Vert cut loose in real time, this is the Vita's most action-packed trip to Gamindustri.
