Item Description
Few artifacts have been tapped, untapped and argued over around kitchen tables for as long as Howling Mine. For two mana it hands every player an extra card in their draw step, as long as the Mine sits untapped. That symmetry is both the joke and the engine: the whole table speeds up, hands fill out, and the player who built around the extra cards gets the most from them.
In Commander it anchors group-hug and punisher decks alike. Pair it with Nekusar, the Mindrazer or Underworld Dreams and every gifted card becomes a point of damage; tap it down with an Icy Manipulator during an opponent's upkeep and the bonus card skips them while yours still arrives after your untap step. It is a small artifact with a lot of table politics baked in.
This is the Secret Lair Drop printing from the Artist Series: Mark Poole drop, collector number 177, in foil. Poole painted Howling Mine for Alpha in 1993, so this release puts one of Magic's original artists back on a card he helped define, now with a foil finish the first printing never had.
