Item Description
Give everyone more cards and see who knows what to do with them. That has been Howling Mine's bargain since Magic's very first set: a two-mana artifact that lets each player draw an additional card in their draw step, provided the Mine is still untapped.
The fun lies in bending that symmetry your way. Draw-punisher Commander decks love it, because every extra card an opponent draws can trigger Nekusar, the Mindrazer or Underworld Dreams. Control players tap it during opponents' upkeeps so the bonus only lands on their own turn. And in a multiplayer pod, the player handing out free cards is rarely the first one anyone wants to attack, which makes the Mine as much a diplomatic tool as a draw engine.
This is the Commander 2016 printing, collector number 257, illustrated by Ralph Horsley, in non-foil. Commander 2016 was the four-color preconstructed release that introduced partner commanders, and Horsley's version keeps the haunted-mine mood with flavor text to match: "The mine's riches never end, nor do the moans of the spirits doomed to haunt them."
