Item Description

Few arcade cabinets of the late 1990s drew a crowd like Sega's The House of the Dead 2. Two plastic pistols, a city overrun by the undead and some of the most gloriously stilted voice acting ever recorded (“Don't come! Don't come!”) added up to a light-gun shooter people still quote decades later. This 2025 remake from MegaPixel Studio and Forever Entertainment rebuilds that 1998 classic for the Switch, following the same team's remake of the first game.

You play as AMS agents James Taylor or Gary Stewart, sent into a canal city modeled on Venice where the scheming Goldman has unleashed his creatures. The structure is pure arcade: enemies lurch out of doorways and off rooftops, you blast them before they land a hit, and whether you rescue the civilians caught in each ambush can change the route you take through the city. The bosses carry tarot names, among them the Hierophant, the Tower and the Emperor, and learning their weak points is half the fun.

The remake overhauls the visuals with redesigned enemies and updated gore effects, and it offers both an original campaign and an arcade version, a boss mode for jumping straight to the big fights and a training mode with challenges like protecting bystanders or shooting barrels against the clock. A second player can join in for co-op, which is how this game was always meant to be played. Aiming uses either Joy-Con gyro or the analog stick, and reviews were mixed, with most of the debate centered on how well controller aiming stands in for a light gun, so it pays to spend a few minutes tuning sensitivity before your first run.

For anyone who spent their pocket change on this cabinet, or knows it through its Dreamcast port and the cult spin-off The Typing of the Dead, the remake offers a modern way to revisit Goldman's campy horror show without hunting down an old CRT and light gun.
