Item Description

Two of gaming's most unrepentant cult auteurs share the marquee here. Hotel Barcelona pairs SWERY, the mind behind Deadly Premonition, with SUDA51 of Grasshopper Manufacture fame, and the result is every bit as strange as that billing suggests. Developed by SWERY's studio White Owls and published by CULT Games, it sends Justine, a government agent chasing the killer who murdered her father, into a cursed hotel where serial killers from all over the United States are said to have gathered. She is not alone in her own head, either: the spirit of a murderer called Dr. Carnival lives inside her body and lends his bloodthirsty talents to every fight.

It plays as a 2D action roguelite built from short, frantic runs. Each attempt is a race against the clock through a string of stages, each rolling a random time of day and weather that changes how quickly Dr. Carnival's special attack charges, with exit doors handing out bonuses along the way. Between runs, the story and your conversations with the hotel's oddball guests move forward in the style Hades made popular. The most unusual idea is the ghost system, where echoes of your earlier attempts replay their routes beside you and attack enemies, so every failure literally leaves something behind. The killers on the guest list include a deranged butcher and an alien social media influencer, and claiming the hearts of the hotel's bosses is the road to the witch at the center of it all.

Critics were divided, and several found the combat thin and the presentation rough around the edges. But SWERY and SUDA51 have never made games for everyone, and the appeal here is the B-movie slasher pastiche, the deadpan humor and the sheer oddity of a hotel stocked with genre-film killers. For anyone who follows either designer's career, it's a fascinating, flawed and thoroughly unconventional piece of their shared work on PS5.
