Item Description

There is a particular kind of tension in Hot Shots Golf that no serious simulation quite matches: a cartoon golfer with an oversized grin, a pin tucked behind a bunker, and three taps of the X button standing between you and a chip-in. Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds was the series' first round on the PlayStation 3, known as Everybody's Golf 5 in Japan, and developer Clap Hanz used the jump to high definition to rethink the one thing every Hot Shots fan thought was settled.

That rethink is the new Advance swing. The familiar three-tap rhythm is still there, but the power gauge is gone, so you have to learn how each golfer actually swings and judge distance by feel. It hits longer and punishes sloppy timing harder, and some tournaments insist you use it. The traditional gauge is still on offer for relaxed rounds, so newcomers are never locked out while veterans get a fresh skill to master.

The single-player Challenge mode is the series' classic loop at its most moreish: win a run of tournaments, beat a rival to unlock a new character, rank up, repeat. Along the way you earn clubs, balls and caddies, while loyalty points reward sticking with one golfer by opening up new outfits and special abilities. The six courses are mostly high-definition revisits of favorites from earlier entries, now dotted with wildlife that wanders into view at exactly the wrong moment. Out of Bounds was also built around ambitious online play for its day, with lobbies of up to 50 players teeing off at the same time rather than waiting their turn.

What makes it worth owning now is how well the formula has aged. Pass-the-controller rounds with friends on the couch need nothing more than the disc and a sense of humor, and the Advance swing gives this entry a distinct identity among the many Hot Shots games. It is the version where the series' easygoing charm picked up a meaner, more skillful edge, and it plays beautifully on the hardware it was made for.
