Item Description

A Tremortusk, a mammoth-sized war machine bristling with tusks and cannons, is charging across the valley, and Aloy has a bow. Horizon Forbidden West is built on moments like that, and Guerrilla Games' 2022 sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn makes them bigger, stranger and more varied than ever.

With a red blight killing crops and deadly storms spreading, Aloy follows the trail west into a frontier spread across the ruins of the old American West, from the sand-choked towers of a buried Las Vegas to the drowned remains of San Francisco. There she meets new tribes, among them the warlike Tenakth, the farming Utaru and the seafaring Quen, crosses paths again with the enigmatic Sylens, voiced by Lance Reddick, and uncovers the Zeniths, a threat far older and more powerful than anything she has faced. Old friends like Varl and Erend return, and new allies such as the Tenakth warrior Kotallo and the Utaru Zo gather at a base that slowly fills with their stories.

Fighting machines is still about reading them: scanning with the Focus for weak points, then tearing off armor, cannons and components with the right elemental ammo. Aloy's arsenal grows with new tools like the Shredder Gauntlet and Spike Thrower, Valor Surges add powerful special abilities, and melee runs deeper thanks to Resonator Blasts. Getting around is a joy, with free climbing, the Pullcaster grapple, the Shieldwing glider, a diving mask for underwater exploration and mounts that include the raptor-like Clawstrider and, eventually, the flying Sunwing.

Side activities have real personality too, especially Machine Strike, a tabletop strategy game played with carved machine pieces that is dangerously easy to lose an evening to. Guerrilla built the PS5 version to show off the hardware, from DualSense tension on every bow draw to some of the most striking landscapes of the generation, and in 2023 it followed up with Burning Shores, a PS5-only expansion set in the ruins of Los Angeles. This is where Aloy's world opens all the way up.
