Item Description

No referees, no free throws, no arena lights. Hoops takes basketball out to an outdoor half court, where games are won with quick hands, sharp passing and a well-timed dunk. Developed by Aicom and published by Jaleco in 1988, it began life in Japan as Moero!! Junior Basket: Two on Two, part of Jaleco's Moero!! sports series, and reached the NES with its streetball attitude fully intact.

Eight playground regulars make up the roster, including Mr. Doc, Jammer, Legs, Bomber and Wiz. Pick one for a one-on-one duel or two for a two-on-two game, choose the Eastern or Western court, and set the rules, including whether the team that scores keeps the ball. Play against the computer, go head to head with a friend, or team up with a friend against the CPU. Defense matters as much as scoring, with blocks, steals and smart passes all in your hands, and dunk attempts cut to a slow-motion sequence that a quick defender can still swat away. An Around the World mode rounds things out for anyone who just wants to work on their shot.

Contemporary reviewers liked it, with one newspaper critic ranking it among the best basketball games on the NES, and the appeal is easy to see. Hoops is quick to pick up, ideal for short couch sessions, and an unusually personable sports game for the 8-bit era thanks to its cast of named street players, a welcome change from the five-on-five arena games of its day.

About the game

Gym rats, beware! HOOPS takes you out to the asphault, where basketball is a half-court game of fast hands, faster moves and slam-jam-thank-you-Sam dunks! The legends of the Playground are all here: Mr. Doc, Jammer, Legs, Bomber, Wiz, eight players in all. You can pit them one-on-one or two-on-two. You pick the court - Eastern or Western - and you pick the rules, too. You can play against the computer or one other player. Or you can even team up with another player against the computer. You can block shots, make steals, pass off or go strong to the hoop - in fact, you control just about everything in this ultra-realistic rendition of the playground game. Except, of course, the final score. But win or lose, you know you've been in a game after you've played a game of HOOPS!
