Item Description
Hokori, Dust Drinker is the kind of card that makes a whole table groan. While it is on the battlefield, lands don't untap during their controllers' untap steps; instead, each player untaps just one land at the beginning of their upkeep. Suddenly everyone is playing on one or two mana a turn, and a lean, low-curve deck can run circles around opponents stuck holding expensive spells.
That is classic stax, the same idea as the old Winter Orb, stapled to a four-mana legendary Spirit. Prison decks deploy mana rocks and cheap threats first, since only lands are affected, then drop Hokori to lock everyone else down. In Commander it can lead a mono-white stax deck or sit in the 99 of any list that thrives on mana denial. Its flavor text sums up its reputation: Hokori went by many names, but none of them was “The Merciful.”
Hokori debuted in Betrayers of Kamigawa. This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 420, a borderless foil illustrated by Yuko Shimizu, whose ink-driven, Japanese-print-inspired style suits a Kamigawa legend beautifully.
