Item Description
Modern players still talk about Hogaak Summer. Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis is an 8/8 trampler that can't be cast with mana at all. Instead you pay with convoke, tapping your creatures, and delve, exiling cards from your graveyard, and you can cast it straight out of your graveyard. Fill the yard, flood the board with cheap recursive creatures, and an eight-power trampler shows up astonishingly early.
That engine was strong enough that Hogaak was banned in Modern in August 2019, only a couple of months after Modern Horizons arrived, which made it one of the most talked-about cards of that era. It is still a showpiece for graveyard players and a wild build-around for Golgari self-mill decks in Commander, where token makers and a stocked graveyard pay its convoke and delve costs with ease, and it keeps coming back from the yard.
Hogaak first appeared in Modern Horizons, the 2019 set of new cards designed to go straight into Modern. This is that original printing, collector number 202, illustrated by Vincent Proce, in non-foil.
