Item Description
Every Commander table eventually reaches the moment when an opponent tries to steal, exile or shrink your best creature, and High Market answers with a simple trick: tap it, sacrifice a creature, gain 1 life. Because it is a land, it costs you no spell slot and sits quietly in your mana base until the exact instant you need a sacrifice outlet.
That instant-speed outlet is the whole appeal. Sacrifice a creature in response to a Control Magic-style theft and the spell has nothing left to take. Cash in a creature that is about to be exiled, or feed death triggers in aristocrats decks: Blood Artist-style drains, Grave Pact effects, and undying or persist creatures that come right back. On quiet turns it simply taps for colorless mana.
High Market first appeared in Mercadian Masques, and its flavor text still sells the bazaar city of Mercadia: “If it can't be had here, it can't be had on any world.” This is the Commander Anthology printing, collector number 257, illustrated by Carl Critchlow, in non-foil.
